Video Picks of the Week
Our Video Picks return in a somewhat sombre mood, following the sudden deaths of two of the best-loved and most respected people in British comedy.
Despite having sizeable credits to their names, both are somewhat underrepresented as performers on YouTube, but we’ve managed to locate some clips by way of tribute.
Firstly, the writer, performer, producer, television executive, and all-round comedy Midas, Geoffrey Perkins, who was killed on August 29th after collapsing into the path of a lorry not far from his London home.
An obituary can be found here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/2657112/Geoffrey-Perkins.html
And here’s Geoff as ultra-smug presenter Mike Flex in one of the many sketches from Radio Four’s Radio Active series that seamlessly made the transition to television’s KYTV, the European Masterquiz:
A mere two days later, on August 31st, news broke of the sudden death of the actor, writer, director, and improv genius Ken Campbell.
Ken’s live shows, which would be part-stand up, part-theatrical anecdotes, and part-quantum physics experiments, were some of the best this writer has ever seen.
An obituary can be found here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2008/sep/01/obituary.ken.campbell?gusrc=rss&feed=stage
And here’s a two-part video of Ken introducing last year’s tribute to Robert Anton Wilson, author of The Illuminatus! Trilogy and Cosmic Trigger (among many other books and essays) at London’s South Bank:
Geoff and Ken’s contributions to comedy were immense. We shall never see their like again.
